2022 European Rowing Championships entries released

The 2022 European Rowing Championships, part of the multi-sport European Championships Munich 2022 in Munich, Germany have attracted entries from 33 European nations ,with 553 rowers competing for the title of European Rowing Champion.

This is the second time the multi-sport European Championships are taking place and rowing is one of nine sports participating. Athletes across all sports will compete over a period of ten days from 11-21 August, with rowing taking place at Oberschleissheim, just outside of Munich, from 11-14 August 2022.

The rowing programme has entries in 23 boat classes, with the largest number coming in the men’s single sculls. Strong competition is expected between reigning Olympic champion Stefanos Ntouskos of Greece and Olympic silver medallist Kjetil Borch of Norway, with reigning European champion, Oliver Zeidler of Germany also in the mix. The women’s single sculls will see World Rowing Cups I & II winner, and overall World Rowing Cup series winner, Karolien Florijn of the Netherlands, up against Austria’s Olympic bronze medallist Magdalena Lobnig. Florijn remains unbeaten so far this season.

There will be high expectations for the Sinkovic brothers of Croatia, unbeaten since their return to the double sculls at the start of this season. The women’s double sculls will be a showdown between Roos de Jong and Laila Youssifou of the Netherlands, winners of the 2022 World Rowing Cup series, against the reigning Olympic champions from Romania, Simona Radis and Ancuta Bodnar.

Italy is sending the largest team with entries in 20 of the boat classes. The Olympic champions in the lightweight women’s double sculls, Valentina Rodini and Federica Cesarini, will be racing against the Tokyo 2020 combinations from Great Britain and France.

Host nation Germany’s hopes will be on their single scullers. Alexandra Foester comes to Munich having won at World Rowing Cup III, and being crowned World Rowing Under 23 Champion in Italy last week. And Oliver Zeidler, racing on his home waters, is looking for revenge after his performance at the Olympics last year. The men’s eight, the flagship boat for Germany, is also expecting good results with Olympic silver medallist Laurits Follert sitting in the middle of the boat. They will face Great Britain, winners of World Rowing Cups I and III.

In the para-rowing boat classes, all eyes will be on Birgit Skarstein of Norway, who rides an unbelievable 22-races winning streak at World and Paralympic rowing events in the PR1 women’s single sculls. The PR1 men’s single sculls sees the return of reigning Paralympic champion, Roman Polianskyi of Ukraine, facing World Cup winner Giacomo Perini of Italy.

Racing begins on Thursday 11 August at 9:00 CET with heats that will then progress through repechages, semifinals and finals that will take place on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 August 2022. All four days of heats, repechages, semifinals and finals will be live streamed on www.worldrowing.com.

European Rowing Championships have been staged  since 1893, and are one of the longest running sport championships on the international calendar. After a hiatus, it was reinstated in 2007, and for this first time in 2018, was part of a multi-sport event. The European Rowing Championships are open to the 46 European national rowing federations, including Israel.
