Dutch domination at Switzerland’s BaselHead
The 12th BaselHead Regatta had the Netherlands taking out top honours in both the men’s and women’s eight. The Dutch also dominated in the 350-metre sprint event with A.S.R. Nereus recording the fastest time.
Raced on the Rhine River in Basel, Switzerland, a record 168 entries were received, coming from eight nations. For the head race the course covered 6.4km with a halfway turn and included several bridges and buoys to navigate.
The Dutch men’s eight finished in a time of 18:35, just seven seconds off the course record which was set in 2021 by the Netherlands. The Dutch eight was followed by as second Dutch crew, A.S.R. Nereus 1 with Switzerland in third and Dukla Prague from the Czech Republic in fourth.
For the women A.G.S.R. Gyas from the Netherlands was first. They recorded a time of 20:47. A crew of top international rowers, the ‘Great 8’ came in second, with the NED/GBR composite crew in third. This was a composite crew of the Great Britain Women’s Four (Samantha Redgrave, Rebecca Shorten, Heidi Long, Rowan McKellar) and members of the Dutch Women’s National Team (Laila Youssifou, Roos de Jong, Ymkje Clevering, Maartje Damen, and coxswain Aniek van Veenen)
Weather for racing was perfect with no wind and around 10 degrees Celsius. About 10 000 people lined the bank to watch the racing.
