Saturday Morning Racing, 2018 World Rowing Masters Regatta, Sarasota-Bradenton, USA

This year’s regatta is the second largest in the history of the World Rowing Masters Regatta with 3526 athletes entered. They come from 740 clubs from 52 nations and with rowers often entering more than one race, over 13,000 seats will be taken up.

The men’s single sculls has attracted the most entries totalling 1030. The entries are spread across the age categories. These start at category ‘A’ for minimum age of 27 years and through to category ‘M’ for average age of 89 years or more. The majority of entries are in the 50-60 year old age categories with 55 being the most popular age.

Germany is sending the most number of rowers with 550 taking part. This is followed closely by Great Britain. Then comes Japan, the United States and Australia.

Racing takes place over 1000m with races starting every three minutes. To get through such a large number of races, most days start at 8:30am and go through to 6pm. There is no racing progression system through heats, semifinals and finals so all races are finals with medals being awarded for each race.

Located 50 km from Budapest, Lake Velence is the regatta venue. This is the second biggest lake in Hungary at 26 km2 and is completely surrounded by nature.
