2021 European Rowing Junior Championships goes to Munich

Under 19 rowing turns to Munich, Germany for the 2021 European Rowing Junior Championships where 500 rowers from 27 European nations will be racing.

The regatta takes place from 9 to 10 October 2021 at the venue which is due to host next year’s multisport European Championships mega-event. It is also the home of the 1972 Olympic Games and situated in Oberschleissheim on the outskirts of Munich.

Of the 14 boat classes that will be raced, Germany has an entry in every event and a team that is appearing on the international scene for the first time. Italy is also boating a large team with varying levels of international experience. Italy’s duo of Emanuele Bergamin and Marco Dri are potential medal prospects in the men’s double sculls after finishing fourth earlier this season at the World Rowing Junior Championships. Their main competition is likely to come from Mikolaj Kulka and Daniel Galeza of Poland who took bronze at the Junior Worlds.

The likely favourites for Italy will be their men’s coxed four who come to Munich off the back of a gold medal at the World Rowing Junior Championships.

All eyes will be on the women’s single sculls with junior champion Aurelia-Maxima Janzen of Switzerland facing the junior silver medallist Giulia Clerici of Italy as well as bronze medallist in the lightweight single from the European Rowing Under 23 Championships. The women’s single has rowers from 16 countries entered.

For the men’s single sculls, winner of the World Rowing Junior Championships Povilas Juskevicius of Lithuania heads the list of rowers from 17 countries entered in this race. Also racing is World Rowing Junior Championships silver medallist Aaron Andries of Belgium. And potential to be in the hunt for medals is Iasonas Exarchou of Greece. Exarchou finished second in the men’s double sculls earlier this season at the European Rowing Under 23 Championships.

The European Rowing Junior Championships is raced in 14 boat classes and is open to all European Member Federations (which includes Israel) for athletes under the age of 19. A rower may compete in a junior rowing event until 31 December of the year in which he/she reaches the age of 18.

Racing begins on Saturday 9 October with heats and progresses through repechages, semifinals and to the finals on Sunday 10 October.
