Indian Ocean 2012 expedition.

In June 2012 world ocean rowing have assembled a crew to take on one of the last “firsts” in the sport of ocean rowing.

An un-supported crossing of the whole Indian ocean from the West coast of Australia to the East coast of Africa. The team of 6 include 5 that have already rowed an ocean and 3 of the 5 are Guinness world record holders in the sport.

Indian 2012 crew :

Matt Craughwell : Skipper

Matt set up WOR in April 2009 as a means to fulfill his ambitions in the sport of ocean rowing while at the same time help others achieve their dreams of an ocean rowing crossing. In 2010, Matt skippered the 6 person crew aboard ‘Sara G’ across the Atlantic from Morocco to Barbados in 57 days, 20 hours, but with the 2011 expedition his ambition’s were realized, in 33 days, 21 hours, Matt skippered “Sara G” to 2 world records: “fastest crossing of the Atlantic E-W” and “12 consecutive days of 100+ miles rowed by ocean rowing boat”.

James Kenworthy : Crew

James is 30 years old and comes from South Godstone, Surrey. After having spent five years in the army. A keen sportsman, James fulfilled a personal ambition of some years by rowing across the Atlantic in January 2010.


Mike Jones : Crew

Mike Jones, 30, from Cobh, Co. Cork in Ireland, works as the Operations Manager for the University of Limerick Activity Centre. Mike grew up in the historic port town of Cobh and with a fisherman as a father it was inevitable that he would at some stage take to the ocean. Mike rowed across the Atlantic in January 2010.


Tim Spiteri : Crew

Tim is a 33 year old police officer from Melbourne, Australia. He is a keen outdoorsman and has participated in club and school rowing over the years along with a few seasons of surf boat rowing. More recently Tim has been coaching at both school and club level rowing. He is training hard in his quest to make crossing the Indian Ocean a reality.


Fiann Paul : Crew

Fiann (Iceland); artist, sportsman and adventurer concentrating his work in the North Atlantic countries of Iceland, Greenland and the Faroe Islands. Fiann was part of the 2011 Atlantic row, breaking two world records. Fiann can’t wait to see the high Indian Ocean waves. He experienced rowing 6m Atlantic Ocean waves as one of the most enjoyable phenomenons ever.


Livar Nysted : Crew

Livar Nysted is 40 years old, married to Svanna and has 4 daughters. Livar has been competition rowing in the Faroe Islands for many years and has won 3 championships. He has rowed more than 5,000 miles at sea and in 2010 he was part of the Artemis Investments crew that set 2 world records crossing the North Atlantic: “fastest crossing” 43 days 21 hrs 26 mins, and “24-hour speed record on the North Atlantic route, covering 118miles (103 n/miles) “.
